Cut Tissue Paper Illustrations
These illustrations are all drawn first, figuring out the design, layout and composition before being cut out of a variety of colored tissue paper using my trusty X-Acto knife and a good supply of blades.
This is the opening title sequence from Kirk Kelley’s stop-motion and CGI short “Dia de Los Muertos” produced at Will Vinton Studios in 2000. I designed and cut the title cards, including the “Will Vinton Studios Presents” and “Dia de Los Muertos” banners. Medium is tissue paper. Below are work in progress images, showing how these are cut in a stack of about 13 sheets of tissue paper with the design on top.
Below is the alternate design that was not used, with a caricature of Will Vinton himself and some detail of the skeletons I put into the design.
